Reports To: Senior Advisor of Curriculum, Impact, and Innovation

Starting Date: March 2022

Founded in 2013, Hack the Hood (HtH) is a non-profit organization based in Oakland, California with a mission to train early career youth and communities of color through tech skill-building programs grounded in justice and career navigation support that ensures economic mobility. We hold the value of racial justice deeply and ensure every decision we make holds equity at the center. We believe that our work has generational impact, that data is power and there ain’t no tech without us! We approach every learning experience with a justice- centered approach and provide socio-political content across our programs.

At HtH, we understand that learning how to thrive in a technology career pathway and gaining access to the education necessary to succeed can be particularly challenging in Black, Indigenous, Latinx or AAPI communities. This is the bridge we aim to provide at HtH! We design and deliver rigorous, justice-centered tech and data literacy curriculum that supports economic mobility for the communities we serve. Are you ready to join us in preparing our folks for the future of work?

There are exciting initiatives in the works for our organization. We are looking for a justice-minded Technical Instructor eager to build and grow with us. Is that you?

About the position

In this role, you will be responsible for teaching 1 section of our tech fundamentals or data science foundations learning experience for learners ages 16-25. Typical programs require approximately 12-16 hours per week of teaching time. Additional support for office hours and teacher preparation are an expected part of the work schedule. Learners are geographically located in the US and may be learning in individual, collaborative, in-person, virtual or hybrid environments.

As a Technical Instructor, you will work with other Instructors, program and organizational staff to deliver training content in Hack the Hood’s informal education programs. The curriculum focuses on web development and fundamental data science skills with an emphasis on applications for social justice and tech ethics.

We’re seeking a teammate with practical technology, computer science, and data science skills with an emphasis on how technology can be used for constructive social and racial justice goals. Experience as a teacher, tutor, or facilitator is a bonus. Your practical technical expertise and enthusiasm for teaching, youth skill development and social justice will set your application apart. We are a small organization, so a self-starter who appreciates individual and team accountability is a plus.

  • Lead and facilitate teaching sessions, community building and related professional skills sessions.
  • Leverage, adapt and contribute to existing instructor materials and student resources (course outlines, instructional materials, and training aids)
  • Provide small group mentorship opportunities and technical support to students
  • Collaborate with other instructors and programs team to identify young people with strong technical and professional development skills for post- program opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure all student data is collected and accurate.

We’re excited to connect with candidates who have
