Departmental Overview

At the Herbert Wertheim School of Optometry & Vision Science at the University of California, Berkeley, we have long lived by defining principles that guide us and differentiate us. Our O.D. program is a 4-year program with clinical training provided at 2 campus clinics, 10 satellite clinics (community care), 7 VA clinics, and 24 external clinics across the country. Our one-year post-graduate residency programs provide advanced clinical education in specialty areas of optometry to 18 residents with placement on and off campus, and our Vision Science program consists of 40 PhD students.

Responsibilities

Alumni Engagement and Events
Contribute to a department-wide effort of engaging alumni, donors, and friends; developing programming, increasing volunteer involvement and unrestricted giving. Oversee planning, coordination, and execution of all alumni/donor engagement events, including Reunion Celebration, Optometry conferences and receptions; and other regional, shared interest, and campus alumni programs and activities. Designs, organizes, and implements special events and has direct interaction with alumni and other donors. Coordinate other advancement events, including: on and off campus campaign events, stewardship events. In conjunction with the Advancement Events Manager, the Associate Director of Alumni Engagement and Annual Fund will manage event logistics including securing venue and speakers, coordinating guest lists and RSVPs, working with Facilities, Catering, other vendors, and other event coordination as needed. Working with the DAR team, the Associate Director of Alumni Engagement and Annual Fund will design, organize, and provide strategic direction for a variety of engagement and stewardship events. In conjunction with the Assistant Dean and the Dean, the Associate Director of Alumni Engagement and Annual Fund will manage and staff the alumni board meetings. Plan, schedule, and implement messaging and communications for the alumni community.
Unrestricted Giving/Annual Fund
Responsible for the overall management and execution of Big Give. Plan, schedule, and implement the Annual Fund Program, including specific initiatives such as Leadership Circle, Big Give, etc. Manage Leadership Circle society. Track and measure AF performance metrics and ensures that predetermined fundraising and alumni relations goals are met. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and/or steward AF donors, alumni, and friends. Manage all efforts related to Reunion Class giving programs including identifying, recruiting, and supporting gift volunteers, and creating and implementing strategies and tactics to reach dollar and participation goals. Provide ROI analysis and information on complex results or activities, and make recommendations to senior leadership for program changes or additions. Participate in short and long-range strategic planning and prepares the Annual Fund and Alumni Relations annual budget. Assist in detailed planning of fund development and annual solicitation programs and uses the CADS database to support these strategies and plans. Working with campus Direct Response Marketing (DRM), the Associate Director of Alumni Engagement and Annual Fund will coordinate DRM fundraising appeals. Develop and maintain alumni relations and annual fund calendar. Work with campus partners to develop crowdfunding initiatives using fundraising platforms to create campaigns to increase student, staff, and alumni participation. Develop text communications for event reminders and appeals.
DEI Alumni Program
Responsible for expanding the depth and scope of DEI programming, events, and engagement opportunities for our alumni community. In coordination with the Admissions and Student Affairs Office, and DEI Director and Council, the Associate Director of Alumni Engagement and Annual Fund will develop meaningful volunteer opportunities, programming, and initiatives that connect students and alumni around issues of DEI. Work with DAR team members to develop philanthropic opportunities and programs focusing on DEI initiatives and alumni engagement. Partner with DEI Director and Marketing and Communications Director to create constituent and alumni materials that raise the visibility of DEI programs, resources, and giving opportunities. Actively participate in inclusion, diversity, equity, action, and access learning opportunities to support an inclusive, diverse, and engaged alumni community.
Volunteer Engagement and Management
Manage and staff alumni volunteer program. Work with members of the student and alumni community to increase their participation and awareness of and in advancement programs and activities. Partner with Alumni Board in developing programs and initiatives to further engage alumni. Assist with the engagement of the Alumni Board and other volunteer leaders, including developing materials for meetings. Plan, schedule, and implement messaging and communications for periodic alumni e-newsletters and updates.
Required Qualifications
Thorough working knowledge of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques. Thorough working knowledge of and/or ability to learn the location, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure. Strong knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc. Strong written and interpersonal communication skills to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies. Strong organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills, including skills in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification / avoidance / resolution, and project management skills. Strong skills in maintaining confidentiality.
Preferred Qualifications

Education

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position, eligible for full UC benefits. This is an exempt, monthly paid position. The annual salary is commensurate with experience.
